The single most common question we're asked at survey is simply: what should this cost? It's a fair question, and the vague answers homeowners usually receive are the reason so many bathroom projects go wrong.
Labour is typically half the cost of a quality bathroom. Strip-out, first fix, tanking, tiling, second fix and making good represent two to three weeks of skilled work for a team of two. Any quotation significantly below that is either cutting the tanking, cutting the tiling preparation, or cutting corners you'll only discover in five years.
Materials are the visible half. Large-format porcelain, concealed brassware and a quality shower valve carry a real premium over builders' merchant basics, but they are also the components you touch every day.
Where should you never economise? Waterproofing, the shower valve and the extraction. Everything else can be adjusted to budget without compromising the life of the room.
